SEO Epic Fail + Why I don't use Bing

Did you know Microsoft launched a free Antivirus software?

Yeah.... i know right?    Nobody has!

Well except maybe guys like me, guys who actually care about network security and tinkering around with different tech stuff.

I HAVE to stay on top of tech news and so I tried it.

The antivirus software is called Security Essentials and everything from the installation, user interface and upkeep has been rewardingly simple and easy to use. Did i mention it's free?

How do you get it? Most people i know who are non-techs would just "search" for it and then get it.

Woah woah, most people?

Yes, through my years of working with end users I've found that most people just type everything into the search box of their home page. Even URLs!

The problem here is that you simply can't find* Security Essentials on Microsoft's own search engine!

* You CAN find Security Essentials on Bing but you have to browse around for a bit and know which link you're supposed to click on

Here are the first place results for a few keywords I think people might use, searches done 10/16 on bing.com

Search: Antivirus
Result: Kapersky.com
What it is: An antivirus vendor (aka competition)

Search: Free Antivirus
Result: Avira
What it is: Another competing antivirus vendor

Search: Microsoft free antivirus
Result: Windows Defender
What it is: Anti-spyware made by Microsoft (not antivirus software)

Search: Security Essentials
Result: essentialsecurity.com
What it is: Email encryption software I hadn't heard of or tried

Search: Microsoft Security Essentials (can we get more specific?)
What it is: An MS Connect page with zero content

I just don't get it Microsoft.

You launch things, sometimes really cool things and then you sort of just hope people will hear about it?

Listen:

Two years before the iPhone even came out I was using the web, watching videos and doing all sorts of cool things on my windows mobile phone.

I only did it because I was - and still very much am - a nerd.

So if you want to get with some "normal" people (aka the rest of the world) you'll need to go read an SEO / Marketing book or something.

This product launch is a total fail. You can't even promote your products on a search engine that you OWN?!?

I'm actually surprised no one at microsoft has noticed or addressed this.

Would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
